China strengthens its ties with Gulf countries

Premier Wen Jiabao meets with Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir al-Thani in Doha.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao signed cooperation agreements with Qatar on Wednesday, January 18. The agreements include the construction of a refinery in China, announced today Doha media.

The day before, the Chinese oil company Sinopec signed an energy agreement with the UAE, to build a refinery project in Saudi Arabia.

Beijing has been an important customer of Iranian oil. The Arab monarchies are trying to offer China an alternative.
